Grant Description
Grants of up to $20,000 to Canada healthcare professionals and researchers affiliated with healthcare organizations, IHEs, government agencies, or medical or research facilities for research related to the history of medicine. Funding is intended to support small-budget proposals for research projects in the history of medicine and allied disciplines such as science and technology studies, sociology, anthropology, and classics. Proposals are expected to advance the history of health, healthcare or disease, or the education of health professionals that could benefit the broader community of practitioners in the field.

Projects that consider the Canadian context are particularly welcome and may include requests for seed money to develop research initiatives. Proposals are expected to advance the history of health, healthcare or disease or the education of health professionals that could benefit the broader community of practitioners in the field. There is an expectation that during the period of these grants or within a year of their completion, one or more conference papers or publications/presentations will result from this funding. The AMS Project Grant funding may be used to cover reasonable expenses related to the Fellowship (i.e. salary replacement, travel, and registration expenses, etc.

Additional Eligibility Criteria
To apply for an AMS History of Medicine Project Grant, the applicant must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident AND meet one of the following requirements:
- Be employed as a health professional in Canada by a health care organization/ health authority/ provincial/national government.
- Be a researcher with an academic appointment at a Canadian university or affiliated research institution or hold an appointment (with research responsibilities) at an affiliated hospital/research center/institute; OR,
- Be employed by a health professions organization, eg., CMA, CNA, MCC, or a health professions regulatory body located in Canada.

If ethics approval is required to complete the suggested project, the principal investigator must be able to provide documentation from a Tri-Council Compliant Ethics Board demonstrating that an acceptable review has been completed and the project approved.

Researchers applying to this grant must have one of the following academic appointments:
- Tenured appointments
- Tenure-track appointments
- Probationary tenure-track appointments
- Limited-term appointments
- Continuing appointments
- Clinical scientists, clinical faculty or other appointments approved by a senior official approved (i.e., CEO or VP Research)

Applicants with limited-term appointments are eligible to apply, however, the applicant must either:
- Complete the grant funding period before the end date of the appointment, or
- Provide confirmation from the employing institution that the appointment will be renewed.

Applicants with a limited-term appointment must clearly indicate the end date of the appointment on their CV. They must also provide a letter from a senior official at their institutions indicating the start and end dates of their appointments. PIs holding a limited-term appointment that ends prior to the funding end date are eligible to apply; if successful, a condition of funding will be institutional confirmation of a new appointment.

Adjunct and instructor positions are not considered academic appointments.

Ineligible
Award funding can not be used to support organizational administrative or infrastructure expenses.

Applications can be submitted for more than one grant. Related (but not duplicate) applications are permitted, provided the applicant clearly demonstrates how each application will be unique and can be implemented independently.

Ethics Approval:
If documentation is not available by the submission deadline, then a letter from the institution’s Ethics Board attesting to expediated review of the proposal must be provided.

Number of Grants
AMS Healthcare will support up to seven (7) AMS History of Medicine Project Grants per year.

Estimated Size of Grant
Up to $20,000 per grant.

Term of Contract
The duration of awards is for one year.
